Maine has the opportunity to pass strong data privacy legislation that protects consumer data while still supporting a successful small business ecosystem.
But unfortunately, the majority report on LD1822 – the bill that passed out of the Judiciary Committee – is the wrong approach and will jeopardize access to digital tools that small businesses rely on. That’s why we’re urging our legislators to oppose LD1822 – we can’t afford to make Maine an outlier in the region.
Instead, they should support the minority report on LD 1822, which represents a smart, consistent state law that protects consumers AND supports local business growth.
Maine businesses, especially those in tourism-heavy regions, are already facing challenges:
  • Canadian tourism is down
  • Federal privacy rules are still unclear
  • Businesses must now find new customers and new markets to survive
We need to stop the majority report on LD1822 and urge the Maine legislators to pass sensible reforms.
